Individual Therapy for Adults
You can understand a pattern and still feel stuck in it.
Maybe you know you're too hard on yourself, but the critical voice keeps showing up.
You recognize that you're avoiding something, but knowing that doesn't make it easier to start.
You understand why certain situations trigger anxiety, shame, anger, or fear—and still find yourself reacting the same way.
Sometimes the problem isn't a lack of insight. It's figuring out how to turn what you know into something different.
Individual therapy can help.
Individual therapy in Brunswick, Maine and online
Therapy that helps you understand what's happening—and change what happens next.
I work with thoughtful adults who often have a pretty good understanding of themselves already.
You may be successful in many areas of your life while privately struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, avoidance, painful memories, difficulty managing emotions, or patterns in relationships that keep repeating.
Our work won't stay on the surface.
We'll get curious about the thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors underneath what's happening. We'll identify the patterns that are keeping you stuck and develop practical ways to respond differently.
The goal isn't just greater insight. It's greater freedom.
What can we work on?
Anxiety & Overthinking
Your mind may be very good at finding the next thing to worry about.
You replay conversations. Second-guess decisions. Prepare for things that may never happen. Or avoid situations because uncertainty feels too uncomfortable.
Therapy can help you understand what's fueling the anxiety while learning new ways to respond to worry, uncertainty, and avoidance.
Shame & Self-Esteem
Maybe you're compassionate toward other people but have an entirely different set of rules for yourself.
Mistakes become evidence that you've failed. Criticism sticks with you. You compare yourself to other people or worry that if they really knew you, they'd see something you wish you could hide.
We'll work on understanding where those beliefs come from, changing the way you relate to them, and helping you build a sense of self that isn't dependent on being perfect.
ADHD & Executive Functioning
Sometimes knowing exactly what you need to do doesn't translate into actually doing it.
You may struggle with starting tasks, prioritizing, organizing, estimating time, following through, or keeping track of everything competing for your attention.
We'll develop strategies that work with the way you function—not simply tell you to “try harder.”
Emotion Regulation
Emotions aren't the problem. But they can become overwhelming, confusing, or difficult to manage.
You may shut down, become reactive, avoid difficult feelings, or realize what you needed only after the moment has passed.
Therapy can help you better understand your emotional responses, identify what you need, and create more space between what you feel and what you do next.
OCD
OCD can create an exhausting search for certainty.
Intrusive thoughts or doubts may lead to checking, reassurance seeking, mental reviewing, avoidance, or other attempts to finally feel sure.
Unfortunately, the relief doesn't tend to last.
We'll work on understanding the cycle that's keeping OCD going and developing a different relationship with uncertainty and intrusive thoughts.
Trauma & PTSD
Experiences from the past can continue influencing the present long after the danger has passed.
You may notice yourself avoiding reminders, staying on alert, feeling disconnected, carrying guilt or shame, or reacting strongly in situations that seem unrelated to what happened.
Trauma therapy can help you process what you've experienced and reduce the hold those experiences continue to have on your life.
Relationships & Communication
Relationships often bring our patterns into focus.
You may have difficulty setting boundaries, expressing what you need, tolerating conflict, trusting others, or advocating for yourself.
We'll pay attention to what happens between you and other people—and help you communicate more effectively without losing yourself in the process.
What therapy with me is like
My style is warm and conversational, but active.
I'm not going to sit silently while you do all the work, and I'm also not going to hand you a worksheet and assume the problem is solved.
I'll ask questions, notice patterns, offer observations, teach skills when they're useful, and sometimes challenge you to look at something differently.
We'll also pay attention to what happens between sessions.
Because ultimately, therapy isn't successful simply because you had an insightful conversation.
It matters because something in your life begins to change.
